The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforced ground stops at nine airports across the Northeastern United States on August 6, 2026, halting air traffic due to severe weather threats including thunderstorms and damaging wind gusts expected later in the day.

Cancellation Totals at LaGuardia and Newark

LaGuardia Airport in New York led U.S. airports with cancellations, recording 37 departures and 27 arrivals cancelled on Wednesday and increasing to 43 cancellations early Thursday morning. Newark Liberty International Airport ranked second with 27 cancellations on Wednesday. Airlines operating in this region, notably Delta Air Lines and JetBlue due to their large New York and Boston operations, faced significant disruptions.

Delta’s Rebooking Policies Amid Disruptions

Delta Air Lines responded by offering rebooking options with change fees waived for affected flights occurring August 6 and 7, 2026. Customers must reissue tickets by August 10, 2026, maintaining the same cabin of service for fee waivers, though fare differences may apply if the booking class changes. This policy applies at nine impacted Northeast U.S. hubs including Delta’s major New York airports.

Passenger Experiences Highlight Air Traffic Control and Staffing Causes

Delays at LaGuardia before thunderstorms were attributed to air traffic control problems, with the FAA reporting delays nearing three hours Wednesday. Passenger Mark Haubry tweeted that his Delta flight from Indianapolis to LaGuardia was delayed over two

hours due to air traffic. Staffing issues also disrupted operations; Delta flight DL2396 from LaGuardia to Palm Beach was further delayed as only one pilot was available, according to passenger Rudi Bester.

Forecast and Expected Ongoing Impact

Thunderstorms are forecast to move across New York and New Jersey during Thursday afternoon and evening, reinforcing the FAA’s precautionary ground stops intended to manage safe airport operations amid hazardous weather. Aviation experts and airlines anticipate continued air traffic control delays and cancellations in the region throughout August 6.
