Riviera Travel has cancelled 10 European river cruise departures and modified six others due to navigation restrictions caused by exceptionally low water levels on the Rhine, Danube, Moselle, and Main rivers. These low water levels result from weeks of high temperatures and limited rainfall across parts of Europe.

Passenger Communications and Alternative Arrangements

Riviera Travel has established a dedicated incident team and deployed additional cruise directors and head-office staff onboard ships to manage disruption. The company has increased call-centre capacity and coordinates closely with travel-agent partners, publishing daily operational information through its travel updates hub.

Passengers receive updates approximately 14 days, 7 days, and 72

hours before departure regarding cancellations or itinerary modifications. Affected passengers can opt for full refunds or alternative arrangements, including coach transfers, itinerary changes, ship changes, and alternative river cruises on the Douro, Seine, or Rhône rivers. Riviera also offers transfers to other holidays in 2026 or 2027 and European or worldwide escorted tours as alternatives.

Passengers considering replacements on the Rhine, Danube, or Moselle are advised to select later departure dates due to ongoing low water conditions. If the alternative holiday costs less than the original, Riviera refunds the price difference; if more expensive, Riviera contributes GBP 250 per person

toward additional costs. Passengers receiving refunds also benefit from a 15% Welcome Home Offer valid for six months on future European river cruises in 2026 or 2027.

Navigation Impact on Key Rivers and Commercial Shipping

The exceptionally low water levels severely restrict navigation on multiple commercially important stretches of the Rhine, Danube, Moselle, and Main rivers. The Kaub section on the Rhine in Germany is identified as a critical navigation point experiencing significant constraints. These conditions also impact commercial shipping operations alongside river cruises.

Passenger Feedback and Compensation Policies

Riviera Travel’s post-cruise surveys for July departure Rhine and Danube sailings recorded an average trust score of 8.6 out of 10 and nearly 88%

positive passenger sentiment. The company states cancellations only occur when no viable alternative itinerary can be operated.

For mid-voyage itinerary alterations, Riviera assesses compensation or goodwill after each sailing. Remedies may include cash payments or future travel vouchers depending on the case, aiming to address disruption impacts amid challenging navigation conditions.
