Riviera Travel has cancelled 10 European river cruise departures and modified 6 others on the Rhine, Danube, Moselle and Main rivers due to exceptionally low water levels restricting navigation. These disruptions follow weeks of high temperatures and limited rainfall that have caused water levels to drop on key commercial river sections.
Riviera Travel Operational Response
The UK-based operator has established a dedicated incident team to manage the crisis. Additional cruise directors and head-office personnel have been deployed to ships on affected routes. Call centre capacity has also been increased to handle the higher volume of inquiries, while daily operational updates are provided through Riviera’s
travel updates hub to keep passengers and travel agents informed.
Passenger Communication and Alternative Arrangements
Passengers receive updates approximately 14 days, 7 days, and 72 hours before departure. When navigation is disrupted, Riviera supplies alternatives including coach transfers, itinerary changes, and ship substitutions. If no equivalent alternative can be arranged before departure, full refunds are offered. Passengers can transfer their booking to another Riviera holiday in 2026 or 2027 or choose alternatives such as river cruises on the Douro, Seine, or Rhône rivers, or European and worldwide escorted tours.
When passengers select a replacement with a lower cost than their original booking, Riviera issues a
refund for the price difference. If the alternative is more expensive, the company covers GBP 250 per person towards the extra expense. Those opting for a refund also receive a 15% Welcome Home Offer, increased from the standard 10%, valid for six months on future European river cruises.
Compensation Policy and Wider River Disruption
For voyages already underway that experience mid-cruise changes, Riviera will determine compensation or goodwill arrangements after the affected trip concludes. Compensation decisions, including vouchers or cash refunds, are based on the circumstances of each individual voyage. The disruption extends beyond Riviera to the broader European river cruise network, with extremely low Rhine
water levels significantly restricting commercial shipping, especially at the Kaub section in Germany, a critical navigation point.
Passenger Feedback and Survey Results
In July, Riviera’s post-cruise surveys for cruises on the Rhine and Danube recorded an average trust score of 8.6 out of 10 and a positive sentiment rate approaching 88%. These metrics reflect passenger responses to the company’s operational measures implemented during the low water level disruptions, according to www.cruisemapper.com.
