Train services between Rome and Florence will be suspended from August 10 to 28, 2026, due to scheduled maintenance work on the rail line section between Chiusi and Orvieto. The suspension affects high-speed, intercity, and regional trains operating along this route.
Maintenance Budget and Work Locations
The total maintenance program is valued at approximately €6 million, with €5 million allocated to the Direttissima high-speed route and €1 million dedicated to the conventional Florence-Rome rail line. More than 80 technicians will be engaged daily on the Direttissima works, focused primarily on the Fabro tunnel and Paglia viaduct near Orvieto. Over 30 technicians will work on the
conventional line, concentrating on the Riomaggiore railway bridge between Chiusi and Panicale and the second shelter at Chiusi-Chianciano Terme station. Construction trains and specialized vehicles will support the infrastructure interventions.
Schedule Changes and Travel Time Impact
Rail operations will experience significant schedule modifications during the maintenance period. Passengers should anticipate rescheduled connections and extended travel times through August 31, with most delays resulting from imposed speed restrictions. From August 29 to 31, trains will travel at reduced speeds on affected sections while inspections take place, causing travel time extensions estimated between five and ten minutes. Full service restoration and normal speeds will resume only after completion
of these inspections following August 28.

All schedule adjustments have already been incorporated into the ticketing and sales systems of railway operators. Passengers traveling between Rome and Florence during and after the maintenance period should verify their connection times. According to RFI, the infrastructure company responsible for the works, maintenance has been “scheduled for the summer period to minimize the impact on mobility” and aims to improve “the reliability of the infrastructure and the regularity of rail traffic.”
