Train services across North West England faced cancellations and delays on August 6 and into August 7 as the network recovered. Passengers were advised to verify journey information before travel on August 7. Disruption persisted on some routes, particularly TransPennine

Express services, as operational normality was gradually restored.

Funding Context and Industry Developments

The power outage occurred amid continuing pressures on Network Rail’s budget, despite a £44.1 billion government funding allocation for 2024-2029—£3 billion more than the previous five-year period. Rising inflation, extreme weather, and operational challenges present ongoing difficulties. The UK government plans to replace Network Rail with Great British Railways, a new body integrating infrastructure management with passenger services.
