FAA Equipment Outage Causes Ground Stop, Delays at Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport

FAA Equipment Outage Triggers Flight Delays and Ground Stops in Midwest

A regional FAA air traffic center equipment outage prompted a ground stop at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time on August 6, 2026. Departures were halted and arrivals limited during the outage, which was related to radar and air traffic control system failures impacting the Minneapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center airspace.

Midwest Flight Operations Disrupted

The equipment failure affected flight operations across several Midwest states including Iowa, Michigan, Kansas, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Flights into and out of MSP and adjacent airports were diverted or held in flight. Several inbound flights were rerouted; notably, an

incoming aircraft from Dublin was temporarily redirected to Pittsburgh before returning to MSP.

Passenger Delays and Flight Reroutes

Passengers experienced delays of hours at MSP and airports in the surrounding region. Sierra Maatta, aboard the Dublin to MSP flight, reported her arrival was delayed by nearly an hour and ultimately extended to three hours after her plane was rerouted to Pittsburgh. She described the time in the air as spent waiting and watching movies due to the prolonged approach.

FAA and MSP Official Responses

An MSP spokesperson confirmed the FAA issued a ground stop due to a “regional FAA air traffic center equipment outage.” The ground stop was lifted around

4 p.m. local time, enabling flights to resume. The FAA stated that flights within the Minneapolis ARTCC airspace were paused due to telecommunication issues, but services were fully restored with normal operations resuming thereafter. The FAA is investigating the cause of the outage.

Expert Analysis and Equipment Modernization

Paul Jackson, a retired airline pilot, described the FAA’s air traffic control equipment as “very, very old and very, very out of date in many cases,” praising controllers who operate with antiquated systems. He noted the outage coincides with the FAA’s comprehensive overhaul of its air traffic control infrastructure, emphasizing that modernization is “well overdue.”

Concurrent Local Infrastructure Disruptions

At the

time of the FAA outage, several nearby communities reported internet outages and disruptions to Minnesota state websites, including the 511 travel information system. The connection between these local communication issues and the FAA equipment failure remains unclear.

As of 4:45 p.m. on August 6, 2026, MSP’s website listed 87 delayed departures attributed to the ground stop and system outage.
