Banco BHD and the Dominican Association of Sports Tourism (Adoturd) announced the execution of the first research study on sports tourism in the Dominican Republic on August 4, 2026. The “Economic Impact Study of Sports Tourism in the Dominican Republic” will be conducted by the Center for Tourism Studies and Local Development (CETDEL) and has national and international scope.
Research Objectives and Scope
The study aims to separately measure the sports tourism subsector, provide data on investment and the contribution of sports tourism to the Dominican economy, and understand the consumer profile. It will also contribute to optimizing public policies, fostering innovation, and supporting
sustainability of sports tourism in line with the National Sports Tourism Strategy.
Sports Tourism Impact and Industry Context
Sports tourism represents 10% of total global tourist spending according to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and is the fastest-growing sector in the tourism industry. It increases the average length of stay and raises direct and indirect spending, strengthening the Dominican Republic’s reputation and investment attractiveness in the Caribbean and Central America.

The strategic alliance between Banco BHD and Adoturd includes creating financial products for organizers, tour operators, athletes, and participants, as well as training
micro-enterprises and SMEs involved in the sports tourism value chain.
