The 16th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) was held from October 6 to 8, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, attracting over 10,000 delegates representing 40 countries. The event hosted more than 400 exhibitors and 250 quality-vetted international buyers, marking an approximate 30 percent increase from the 7,691 delegates registered in 2025, signaling rising confidence in Kenya’s tourism market.

Digital Transformation and Data-Driven Marketing at MKTE 2026

Themed “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism,” MKTE 2026 emphasized the integration of data intelligence and technology in tourism marketing. Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) CEO June Chepkemei stated that every part of the event, including buyer selection

and seminar content, was shaped by consumer demand data. She asserted, “We know what the interests of our visitors are and what it takes to convert interest into arrivals. Our marketing campaigns both domestic and international are built on that evidence, and MKTE is the platform where we bring those insights to life for our partners.” The expo provided a platform for government, tourism boards, industry players, and technology partners to collaborate on future tourism growth strategies based on data and innovation.

Government Initiatives Boosting Tourism Growth

The Tour Operators Society of Kenya (TOSK) Chairman Raymond Cheruiyot acknowledged the government’s progressive visa reforms and expanded

air connectivity as critical factors underpinning Kenya’s growing competitiveness as a tourist destination. Cheruiyot said, “The Government’s efforts to improve visa access and expand air connectivity have created a strong foundation for tourism growth.” He further described MKTE as an essential platform for promoting Kenya’s diverse tourism offerings and forging strategic partnerships, with the private sector committed to increasing visitor arrivals and tourism revenue in partnership with government.

Focus on Kenya’s MICE Sector

The expo highlighted Kenya’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector as an important pillar of tourism expansion. Duncan Muriuki, Chair of the Kenya MICE Association, noted collaboration with government and private

stakeholders to enhance Kenya’s competitiveness in the global MICE market. He said, “MICE is the next frontier for growing tourism revenue. Our focus is not just on increasing visitor numbers, but on attracting high-value business events that deliver greater economic impact.” Through the Kenya MICE Club, the sector is developing competitive bidding packages offering destination incentives. Muriuki emphasized Kenya’s world-class facilities and attractive “bleisure” (business-leisure) options in Nairobi and Mombasa as advantages for hosting global events and extending business travelers’ stays.

Programming and Outcomes of MKTE 2026

The event featured seminars, business-to-business meetings, and familiarisation trips designed to deepen industry connections and produce tangible trade results.

MKTE 2026 also explored how artificial intelligence, big data analytics, immersive technologies, and smart destination tools can accelerate tourism transformation across Kenya and East Africa. Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei presented a certificate of recognition to Lydia Kimani of Sawela Lodges during the Partners’ breakfast, underscoring public-private cooperation as a key driver of the event’s success and Kenya’s tourism growth trajectory.
