More than 10,700 flights across United States airspace were delayed on Friday, July 17, 2026, as dense smoke from over 900 active wildfires in Canada reduced visibility and created hazardous air quality conditions.
The smoke has affected air traffic from the US Midwest through the Great Lakes and into the East Coast, exposing over 100 million people across 18 states to dangerous fine particulate pollution (PM2.5).
Airline Waivers and Affected Airports
United Airlines issued an air quality travel advisory covering 17 airports in the US and Canada, including Detroit Metropolitan, Toronto Pearson, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Duluth, and multiple airports in Michigan, Wisconsin, and New York.
Passengers with tickets purchased by July 16, 2026, could rebook July 17 or 18 flights without change fees or fare differences through July 20.
Delta Air Lines released a Midwest Air Quality Advisory affecting flights between July 16 and 18 over Detroit, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Grand Rapids, Madison, and other cities in Michigan and Wisconsin. Delta’s waiver allowed rebooking without fees until July 21, 2026, within the same cabin.
American Airlines reported that 42% of its flights were delayed on July 17, more than double its average delay rate for 2026. The airline’s waiver covered 29 airports with
the no-cost rebooking deadline of July 18, which has now passed. Passengers who missed this may apply unused ticket value toward future travel within one year.
Airport and Regional Impact
Philadelphia International Airport recorded 365 delays and 12 cancellations on Thursday, July 16, and over 200 delays on Friday after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a ground delay program. The program was necessary because wildfire smoke reduces visibility in ways that complicate air traffic control routing compared to weather-related delays.
Chicago’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached roughly 153 at 6 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, marking the second worst air quality among major
global cities. Northern Minnesota measured PM2.5 concentrations above 600 micrograms per cubic meter on Thursday and Friday, exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) hazardous limit of 500.
Detroit’s AQI hit approximately 600 on Thursday, breaking its previous record of 465 set during June 2023 wildfires. Other major US cities including Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Washington also ranked among the world’s worst for air quality on Friday.
The National Weather Service forecasted a third wave of Canadian wildfire smoke entering the Great Lakes and Northeast regions through at least Sunday, July 19, 2026, threatening unhealthy air in Chicago, Detroit, and parts of
the Northeast.
Health Advisories and Travel Precautions
The EPA recommends limiting outdoor exertion when the AQI surpasses 150 and avoiding outdoor activities entirely above 200. Masks such as N95 or KN95, which filter about 95% of PM2.5 particles, are advised for protection. Standard cloth masks do not provide sufficient filtration for wildfire smoke.
Tens of thousands of people attending the FIFA World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 17 were advised that current air quality did not pose a threat to the event, although smoke conditions were expected to persist.
Travelers transiting major hubs like Chicago O’Hare, Detroit Metropolitan,
Philadelphia International, and Great Lakes airports were urged to allow extra time for connections and to follow airline and FAA updates rather than relying solely on flight aggregators.
Political and Environmental Context
On July 17, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Truth Social to increase tariffs on Canada to offset the “incalculable” costs of smoke pollution caused by Canadian wildfires. Trump called Canada’s fire management “Willful Negligence” and said the cost “must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying.”
Legal experts and trade officials noted that no clear authority exists for such tariffs. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in February
2026 that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not allow the president to impose tariffs. Additionally, most Canadian goods under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement are exempt from current Section 122 tariffs, which expire July 24, 2026.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said climate change is “the responsibility of all countries, including the United States,” emphasizing joint efforts under bilateral wildfire cooperation agreements signed in 1982 and reaffirmed in 2025. Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski reported Canada has invested $12 billion since 2020 in forest sustainability and fire prevention.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized the U.S. tariff threats, noting Canada’s
assistance to California firefighting last year and challenging the U.S. to remove softwood lumber tariffs exceeding 45% if it wants Canadian cooperation. Ford stated, “I find it a shame the administration in the US and Congress people are writing these letters and blaming us.”
Climate scientists attribute the large scale fires and smoke to the 2026 North American heat wave and climate change, not to Canadian forestry policies. Shel Winkley, chief meteorologist at Climate Central, said temperatures in Ontario on July 13 were 25.2 degrees Fahrenheit above average, a condition virtually impossible without climate change influence. Researcher Daniel Swain highlighted
the heat wave’s role in drying forests and triggering lightning storms that sparked the fires.
The National Interagency Fire Center reported the U.S. has burned over 5,740 square miles during the 2026 wildfire season, 31% above the 10-year average. Canada’s wildfire area through mid-July reached 134% of its 10-year average.
Separately, the Trump administration has moved to close U.S. wildfire smoke research labs, including the Pacific Wildland Fire Sciences Lab in Seattle, which is relied on for forecasting wildfire smoke impacts. Researcher Ernesto Alvarado warned that the closures could undermine wildfire smoke science crucial for public health and aviation safety.
