On July 17, 2026, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) delayed approximately 4,000 flights and cancelled more than 500 flights arriving at New York-area airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Philadelphia International Airport.

Flight Restrictions Include Ground Stops and Ground Delays

The FAA implemented ground stops and ground delays at these airports intermittently throughout the day and expected to continue into the evening. Ground stops require flights destined for affected airports to be held at their departure points until the FAA lifts the restriction. Ground delays allow flights to depart but assign specific takeoff times to maintain safe spacing and reduce

airborne congestion.

Weather and Staffing Constraints Cause Disruptions

The disruptions are attributed to adverse weather conditions combined with staffing shortages at the air traffic control facility responsible for managing the flow of flights to and from the four airports. These conditions constrained the FAA’s ability to maintain routine operations and traffic sequencing.

Passengers flying to JFK, LaGuardia, Newark Liberty International, and Philadelphia International airports should anticipate continued disruptions with changes in scheduling and increased wait times as the FAA manages traffic safely under these constraints.

For ongoing updates on flight statuses, travelers can consult official FAA advisories and flight tracking services.
