The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a ground stop on July 16, 2026, at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field Airport due to thunderstorms. This was the second day in a row that severe weather disrupted flight operations at these North Texas airports.

Ground Stop Timings and Delays

The ground stop at DFW was lifted at 4:23 p.m., while the one at Love Field ended at 5:15 p.m., according to FAA data. Departure delays averaged 90 minutes at DFW and 75 minutes at Love Field during the disruption. Delays were increasing as the situation progressed.

Airline Hubs and Regional Impact

DFW International Airport serves as the

main hub for American Airlines, headquartered in Fort Worth. Dallas Love Field is Southwest Airlines’ home base, with 18 of the airport’s 20 gates operated by the carrier. Both airports manage significant volumes of commercial and private air traffic daily.

Ground stops like these are used to regulate airport traffic flow. In North Texas, they have a pronounced impact because of the region’s heavy volume of incoming and outgoing flights. The July 16 ground stop prevented flights bound for North Texas from departing until the FAA lifted the restrictions.
