Alaska Airlines is launching two nonstop routes from Portland International Airport (PDX) with daily flights year-round to Wenatchee, Washington, beginning October 3, 2026, and seasonal daily service to Tampa, Florida, starting November 20, 2026, through March 28, 2027.

Portland to Wenatchee Flights Operated by Horizon Air

Horizon Air will operate the daily Portland to Wenatchee nonstop flights using Embraer E175 regional jets. Flight time is under one hour, offering a significant reduction in travel time for passengers from central Washington. This route avoids several hours of driving through mountain terrain and bypasses the previous requirement for connections through Seattle.

Seasonal Florida Service Meets Winter Leisure Demand

The Portland to Tampa nonstop route will operate daily

during the busiest winter leisure travel period from November 20, 2026, to March 28, 2027. This new service provides a direct connection between Oregon and Florida’s Gulf Coast, eliminating the need for connections through cities such as Denver, Dallas, Phoenix, Atlanta, or Seattle and improving schedule reliability during peak demand months.

Portland International Airport as a Strategic Hub

Alaska Airlines currently operates more than 100 daily departures from Portland International Airport, linking passengers to approximately 60 destinations across North America. Portland now serves as a key west coast hub for Alaska Airlines, second to Seattle, supporting a mix of business, regional, leisure, and international travel markets.

Airport Infrastructure Enhancements

In

early 2026, Alaska Airlines opened a 14,000-square-foot premium lounge at Portland International Airport that accommodates around 200 guests. The airport is also undergoing a multi-billion-dollar terminal redevelopment project aimed at expanding capacity and enhancing the passenger experience, facilitating further growth of airline operations.

Background Factors Driving Expansion

The Portland to Wenatchee route responds to previously limited air connectivity in central Washington, reducing reliance on Seattle and lengthy road travel. The seasonal Tampa service is driven by strong winter leisure demand linking the Pacific Northwest to warmer Florida destinations. Broad post-pandemic recovery in domestic air travel and shifted airline network strategies favoring point-to-point and regional

routes have supported these expansions. Portland’s stable population growth, tourism increase, and airport improvements make it an attractive hub for Alaska Airlines’ medium-sized city network focus.

Traveler Impact and Connectivity Improvements

Oregon travelers now have direct nonstop flights reducing travel times and removing layovers to key destinations. The Wenatchee route improves access to outdoor recreation areas such as the Cascade Mountains and Lake Chelan, benefiting residents and visitors alike. The Tampa connection grants efficient access to Florida’s Gulf Coast and cruise terminals during peak leisure season, offering better options for holiday and business travelers.

Airline Route Planning Trends

These route launches exemplify a broader airline industry focus on local

demand and limited nonstop competition, moving away from traditional hub-and-spoke models. Alaska Airlines’ investment in Portland reflects industry trends prioritizing medium hubs with strong leisure travel, premium leisure segments, and growing regional markets. Portland remains a strategic complement to Seattle amid evolving passenger preferences for nonstop point-to-point flights.
