The strike stems from unresolved collective bargaining negotiations ongoing since September 2025. The primary issue is compensation for ground duties performed before the plane departs the gate, referred to as “ground pay.” Flight attendants say they work up to 35 unpaid hours monthly on boarding, safety sweeps, assisting passengers, and managing ground delays. WestJet, headquartered in Calgary and serving more than 130 destinations, stated it remains engaged in talks and is “committed to achieving a negotiated tentative agreement that recognises the important contributions and professionalism of WestJet’s Cabin Crew.” The CUPE 8125 union, representing the cabin crew, led a strike vote that passed with 99% in favor last month.
