Vietjet has confirmed it will begin twice-weekly direct flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) starting January 2027. The service will increase to three flights weekly from March 2027. These flights will operate using Airbus A330 aircraft with a seating capacity of up to 377 passengers.

Vietjet Thailand Plans New Route to Australia

Vietjet Thailand, the sister airline of Vietjet, intends to start its inaugural flights to Australia in November 2027 with four weekly services connecting Bangkok and Western Sydney. These plans await regulatory approval before final confirmation.

Airline Commitments at Western Sydney International Airport

Vietjet joins Jetstar, Qantas, Air New Zealand, and Singapore Airlines as the fifth confirmed

airline to operate from Western Sydney International Airport. Fiji Airways has tentatively listed a route between WSI and Nadi starting June 2027; however, neither the airline nor the airport has officially confirmed this service.

Government Support and Strategic Significance

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the Vietjet announcement, emphasizing that Western Sydney deserves an airport with global links. He highlighted that the new flights would enhance Australia-Vietnam connections, boost tourism, and expand trade opportunities in Western Sydney. Albanese’s remarks coincided with the visit of Vietnam’s General Secretary and President, To Lam, to Sydney.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King underscored the development as “a sign of the

momentum we’re seeing build at Sydney’s newest airport,” noting that with just 76 days until passenger services commence at WSI, terminal testing and final preparations are in progress.

NSW Tourism Minister Steve Kamper stated the new route and airport opening present an exciting opportunity to drive tourism, local business growth, and employment in the region.

Background on Vietjet’s Australian Operations and Market Growth

Since launching its first Australian flights to Melbourne in 2023, Vietjet has expanded its footprint to several Australian destinations. The Ho Chi Minh City connection will be the airline’s fifth Australian route and benefits from support through the NSW Government’s Take-Off Fund.

Vietnam has emerged

as one of the fastest-growing outbound destinations for Australian travelers, with consistent double-digit increases in visitors recorded in recent months.

Western Sydney International Airport Readies for Opening

Western Sydney International Airport, also known as Nancy-Bird Walton Airport, is scheduled to begin passenger operations in 76 days from August 10, 2026. Preparatory activities including testing and terminal fit-out are actively underway to ensure readiness for incoming flights like those from Vietjet and other committed airlines.
