Inbound tourism to the United States declined 11.8% year-over-year in August 2026, with visitor arrivals totaling nearly 3.1 million, according to data from the National Travel and Tourism Office reported by Skift.
July 2026 also showed a downturn, as inbound tourism fell by 7% compared to the previous year, indicating a continuing reduction in visitor numbers through the summer months.
Regional Visitor Declines Across All Areas
Visitor arrivals to the U.S. dropped from every global region in August 2026. The steepest decreases were observed from Africa with a 25.5% decline, Central America experiencing a 20.6% reduction, and Western Europe falling by 14.8% year-over-year.
Summer Expectations and World Cup Visitor Shortfall
The U.S. travel
industry had anticipated a strong summer tourism season in 2026. However, the actual performance was disappointing, exacerbated by visitor numbers related to the World Cup that did not meet expectations.
