A heavy rainstorm swept through the Northeast corridor on November 6, 2026, causing localized ponding on roadways and producing low-visibility conditions, according to AccuWeather. The downpour triggered thunderstorm activity that affected air traffic operations across major airports in the New York metropolitan area during the morning hours.

Ground Stops at JFK and LaGuardia

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed ground stops at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA), halting arrivals through at least 8:00 a.m. EST. The FAA’s National Airspace System Status tracker recorded throttled traffic at both airports starting 7:00 a.m. EST due to the storm’s impact on safety and air

traffic control capabilities.

Delays at LaGuardia and Teterboro

LaGuardia experienced departure and arrival delays averaging around 30 minutes, caused by combined weather reroutes and traffic management initiatives aimed at mitigating congestion. Nearby Teterboro Airport (TEB) also faced escalating departure delays averaging 15 minutes as flights were slowed amid worsening weather.

FAA Warnings for Additional Northeast Airports

FAA warned that delay programs or ground stops might be instituted after 12:00 p.m. EST at Boston Logan International (BOS), Newark Liberty (EWR), Philadelphia International (PHL), Washington Dulles (IAD), Reagan National (DCA), and Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) airports. FlightAware reported no significant delays or cancellations at these airports as of 7:30 a.m. EST.

Current Status and Traveler Advisories

Travelers in the

tri-state area were advised to check flight statuses directly with their carriers early on the morning of November 6. The Federal Aviation Administration and AccuWeather highlighted ongoing heavy rain and thunderstorms as the main factors affecting air traffic control operations and airport throughput in the region.
