United Airlines has initiated weekly nonstop flights between Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO), providing direct coast-to-coast air service. This new route commenced recently, expanding United’s network along the U.S. domestic corridors.
Fleet Expansion and Aircraft Deliveries
The launch coincides with United’s ongoing fleet expansion, which includes plans to introduce 250 new aircraft by April 2028. Among these are multiple Airbus A321XLRs and Boeing 787-9s. United expects to receive five A321XLR aircraft during the latter half of 2026 and fifteen more in 2027, with an anticipated total of 28 by April 2028. The first A321XLR is projected to enter service
later in 2026, initially for domestic flights before international deployment.
Strategic Route Development and Executive Insights
United’s CEO Scott Kirby and Global Chief Information Officer Toby Enqvist have indicated plans to announce new routes, including at least one longhaul service from Denver. Kirby referred to an upcoming announcement as “really special,” suggesting expansion into underserved markets. The introduction of aircraft like the A321XLR and 787-9 supports United’s strategy to serve thinner longhaul markets more efficiently, complementing their established hubs and international gateways.
Aircraft Technology and Alliance Effects on Routes
The A321XLR’s extended range enables United to access European and South American markets previously difficult to serve profitably with larger widebody aircraft. With the
exit of SAS from Star Alliance, United gains motivation to establish direct Scandinavian routes. The airline has also emphasized Hong Kong as a transpacific hub with twice daily service from Los Angeles and San Francisco. Wider adoption of the 787-9 will bolster United’s capacity for longhaul flights.
Implications for Passengers
The new weekly nonstop service between Palm Beach International Airport and San Francisco International Airport offers passengers a direct connection between South Florida and the San Francisco Bay Area. This development reduces the requirement for connecting flights and shortens total travel time on this coast-to-coast route, improving convenience for both business and leisure
travelers.
Details on exact flight days, times, and fare promotions for the Palm Beach to San Francisco route have not been disclosed.
