Thunderstorms in Houston caused ground stops at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) today. The ground stop at Intercontinental began shortly after 11:20 a.m. and was scheduled until 12:45 p.m., while Hobby’s ground stop started just before 11:30 a.m. and was expected to last until 1 p.m. Departure delays at Intercontinental are averaging about 45 minutes, increasing as storms continue, and delays at Hobby have jumped from 12 minutes to about 49 minutes.

Before the ground stops, delays at George Bush Intercontinental Airport were nonexistent but now average around 35 minutes. These are the only

weather-related ground stops reported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) nationwide. Flight Aware’s Misery Map lists Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport as the most disrupted nationally with 132 delayed or canceled flights, followed by Intercontinental Airport with 54, and Hobby Airport in the top 10 with 24 delayed or canceled flights.

Weather Conditions and National Impact

The National Weather Service in Houston reports that Southeast Texas is under a deep tropical airmass causing severe thunderstorms and disrupting airport operations. These conditions led the FAA to impose ground stops at Houston’s two major airports to manage congestion on runways and in controlled airspace. A lull in rain

is expected this evening.
