Thailand has reversed its plan to end visa-free entry for Indian tourists and will allow a 30-day visa-exempt stay for Indian visitors starting in 2026, the Thai Cabinet approved this week. This adjustment follows concerns that earlier proposals had already negatively impacted tourist arrivals from India.
Indian Tourists Are Third-Largest Visitor Group
Indian tourists rank as the third-largest segment of visitors to Thailand this year, behind those from China and Malaysia. Indian nationals were previously allowed to stay in Thailand without a visa for up to 60 days before this revision.
Initial Proposal and Its Impact on Arrivals
An earlier government proposal in May aimed to reduce the number of visa-free eligible countries
from 93 to 54, which included plans to end visa-free entry for Indian tourists. Reports indicated confusion from this proposal led to a decline in Indian tourist arrivals prior to policy implementation.
Government Objectives Behind Visa Policy
The revised visa-free travel policy aligns with typical Indian tourist travel behavior and supports Thailand’s efforts to secure Schengen visa exemptions for Thai passport holders. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s administration aims to prevent misuse of visa-free travel to combat illegal activities and to protect local businesses from unfair competition.
Tourism Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul confirmed the Cabinet’s approval of the 30-day visa-free entry for Indian tourists. He stated, “The
Cabinet therefore approved a 30-day visa-free entry to align with the travel behaviour of Indian tourists, who represent a large market for Thailand” and noted the policy could be reviewed if necessary.
Tourism Revenue and Visitor Numbers
Tourism remains a vital economic sector in Thailand. Last year, 33 million foreign visitors generated nearly US$50 billion in tourism revenue. By July 4, 2026, more than 16 million international tourists had visited the country.
Revised Visa-Free Country List
The updated visa-free entry list now includes 60 countries and territories eligible for a 30-day visa-free stay. India remains on this list with its stay allowance reduced to 30 days from 60 days.
New countries added include Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, and the Maldives.
The government plans to continue monitoring the visa policy and review it if future conditions warrant further changes.
