Severe storms in Texas on July 15, 2026, led to a cascade of flight delays and cancellations at airports across the United States. Nationwide, more than 3,600 flights were delayed and 83 canceled as of Wednesday evening, highlighting the extensive impact of the weather system.

Delays and Cancellations at Key Airports

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) reported 693 flight delays as of Wednesday evening. Nearby Dallas Love Field also faced significant disruption with a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stop on Wednesday afternoon. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport recorded the highest cancellations among affected hubs, with 19 canceled flights and 173 delays. Chicago O’Hare International

Airport had 260 delayed flights and nine cancellations by the same time. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport each reported over 80 delays.

FAA Ground Stops Impact Texas Airports

The FAA imposed ground stops at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field on Wednesday due to severe weather conditions. Although the ground stops were lifted later Wednesday, departures at DFW ran approximately 45 minutes behind schedule in the afternoon. The severe weather extended into Thursday, prompting a second consecutive day of ground stops at both Texas airports, with average delays increasing to about 90 minutes by Thursday afternoon.

Airlines Most Affected by Disruptions

American Airlines experienced the largest

disruption with 577 delayed flights as of Wednesday evening, driven by its substantial operations at Dallas-Fort Worth. United Airlines and regional carrier SkyWest also faced hundreds of flight delays during the same period, reflecting widespread disruption among major carriers operating in the affected regions.

Storm System and Weather Impact

The storm system causing the disruptions dropped more than a foot of rain in the Texas Hill Country west of San Antonio. A tornado touched down Wednesday amid a flash flood emergency, further complicating conditions. Governor Greg Abbott confirmed two flood-related deaths attributed to the storm. Rescue operations continued in the flooded areas as authorities dealt

with the aftermath.

Traveler Impact and Recommendations

The storm-related flight disruptions primarily at Texas airports led to nationwide delays affecting thousands of passengers. Airlines advised travelers to monitor flight status through their carrier applications, rebook canceled flights promptly, and review refund and rebooking policies given the potential for overnight delays and cancellations.
