Tamil Nadu showcased its cultural heritage, landscapes, and tourism offerings at Tourism Expo Japan 2026 in Tokyo from September 24 to 27. The Tamil Nadu Tourism booth was formally inaugurated by H.E. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, Ambassador of India to Japan; Dr. S. Swarna, Principal Secretary to the Government, Tourism, Culture and Special Initiatives Department of Tamil Nadu; Mr. Suman Billa, Additional Secretary and Director General of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India; and Ms. Suchi Tyagi, Secretary, Tourism, Government of Rajasthan.
Heritage Highlights and Buddhist Connections
The state emphasized its Buddhist heritage, underscoring historical links with Japan through shared traditions and maritime exchanges involving
ports such as Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, and Poompuhar. Tamil Nadu also referenced its ancient Sangam literature that identifies five ecological landscapes – Kurinji (hilly), Mullai (forest), Marutham (agricultural), Neithal (coastal), and Palai (arid). These diverse ecosystems offer cultural traditions and natural environments distinctive to the region.
Promotional Initiatives Targeting Japanese Travel Market
Tamil Nadu strengthened its engagement with Japan’s travel industry by participating in JATA in Tokyo and hosting a roadshow in Osaka. The state announced registrations for “Discover Tamil Nadu – International Edition 2026-27,” a curated familiarisation trip from January 12 to 20, 2027, coinciding with the Pongal festival season. Up to 10 international travel influencers,
media representatives, agents, tour operators, and destination management companies will be selected to promote Tamil Nadu’s tourism globally.
Tourism and Investment Opportunities
During the expo, Tamil Nadu officials held discussions with Japanese travel trade representatives to boost arrivals and create tailored experiences. The state presented investment and partnership possibilities in heritage hospitality, eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and experiential travel sectors. Tamil Nadu’s cultural portfolio includes seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites and festivals such as the Indian Dance Festival, Tamil Nadu International Balloon Festival, and Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival. Cultural highlights include Pongal celebrations and Jallikattu events.
Diverse Tourism Assets and Cultural Offerings
Tamil Nadu offers varied tourism options encompassing hill
stations like Kolli Hills, Jawadhu Hills, and Yercaud; beaches along its approximately 1,076-kilometer coastline; wildlife and biosphere reserves including Nilgiris, Agasthiyarmalai, and the Gulf of Mannar. Visitors can engage in trekking, water sports, safaris, and explore mangroves and national parks. The state also promotes traditional dance, folk arts, cuisine, and handicrafts with 74 Geographical Indication-tagged products such as brass and bronze items, sarees, embroidery, jewelry, and pottery.
According to Dr. S. Swarna, the participation in Tourism Expo Japan has provided a platform for inviting Japanese travelers to experience Tamil Nadu’s shared Buddhist heritage and its rich cultural and ecological diversity.
The state’s commitment to environmentally and culturally sustainable tourism is reflected in its initiatives in Tokyo and Osaka to expand the tourism network with Japan.
