More than 150 flights were delayed at Sydney Airport on August 8, 2026, affecting both domestic and international services. The disruptions included approximately 95 delayed flights within the Qantas network, with about 25 of those on QantasLink routes, as well as delays to some Virgin Australia flights.

Air Traffic Control Staffing and Roster Constraints at Sydney Airport

Airservices Australia attributed the delays to roster constraints and staffing shortages in the air traffic control tower at Sydney Airport. These shortages forced the implementation of departure spacing measures, which reduced air traffic movement rates and slowed flight departures across the airport’s domestic and international terminals.

Official Responses and Measures Underway

An Airservices Australia spokesperson confirmed the use

of Air Traffic Flow Management measures to manage the reduced capacity and said the organization is working to lessen the impact on passenger travel. They stated that enhanced training is underway to add more air traffic controllers and address workforce rostering limitations.

Stephen Beckett, CEO of Airlines for Australia and New Zealand, said the air traffic control tower is struggling with sufficient roster coverage to maintain efficient operations. He noted that both domestic and international flights have been affected, resulting in thousands of passengers experiencing delays.

Federal Minister for Transport Catherine King called for improved management of disruptions and has

requested Airservices Australia to provide an explanation and a plan to enhance service delivery. She acknowledged the challenge in recruiting and training air traffic controllers and noted that 95 new controllers are expected to be hired within 2026.

Passenger Experiences During Delays

Some travelers reported lengthy waits and inconvenience due to the disruption. Suzanne Baker, flying from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast, described the delays as a “real nuisance” and criticized the shortage of controllers. She highlighted the additional difficulty for her disabled husband who had to wait longer for her arrival.

Another passenger, Louise, traveling to Melbourne, faced about an hour of delay.

She commented on frequent delays at airports and urged better staffing and employee support to reduce such disruptions, especially for families traveling with children.

Operational Impact on Sydney Airport and Network

Sydney Airport, Australia’s largest and busiest, experiences network-wide effects when delays occur. The airport’s congestion amplifies the impact of air traffic control staffing issues, affecting schedules across the national and international flight network. Delays reported on the previous day, August 7, included wait times of up to 80 minutes on the tarmac and average departure delays of 28 minutes during Air Traffic Flow Management measures from 8:20 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

Airservices Australia is addressing these

operational challenges amid growing demand for air travel, with plans to recruit additional controllers. Meanwhile, Sydney Airport continues to face forecasted competition from the upcoming Western Sydney International Airport, which will operate without slot constraints or curfews.
