Storm Austen is causing severe disruption to rail services across Devon and Cornwall on 22 and 23 October 2026 as the Met Office issued an amber weather warning for the South West region. Gusts are expected to exceed 80mph in coastal areas of Devon and Cornwall.
Speed Limits and Safety Measures Implemented
Lower speed limits will be enforced on all trains operating in Devon and Cornwall from the start of service until 1pm on Friday 23 October to ensure safety amid high winds. These safety restrictions reduce train frequency and increase the likelihood of delays across the network.
Service Alterations by Rail Operators
Great Western Railway is limiting long-distance services to
operate only between London Paddington and Plymouth; a shuttle service will run between Plymouth and Penzance instead of direct trains. The Thursday night Sleeper service from London Paddington will terminate at Plymouth rather than continuing further west.
CrossCountry has cancelled all services between Penzance and Plymouth on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 October 2026. Early morning services on Friday may also be cancelled to allow for damage inspection in daylight.
Passenger Advice and Operational Response
Passengers are advised to check www.gwr.com/check for the latest travel updates before travelling. If a train is cancelled, passengers can use alternative services up to two trains before or after
their original booking at no extra cost.
Daryn McCombe, Western performance director for Great Western Railway and Network Rail, said teams including chainsaw and specialist colleagues are deployed to quickly clear debris on the tracks. He stated, “We’re grateful for everyone’s patience as our teams work hard to keep people moving safely.” He emphasized the priority is maintaining safety while keeping services running.
The combination of strong winds, speed restrictions, cancellations, and service reductions means trains in Devon and Cornwall are likely to be busier and subject to longer journey times over the coming days.
