The Spanish train drivers’ union SEMAF has called a 24-hour nationwide strike across all Renfe Group companies on October 29, 2026, from 00:01 to 23:59 local time. The action will impact Renfe’s high-speed AVE and Avlo services, long-distance trains, regional lines, and Cercanías commuter networks throughout Spain.

Background and Union Demands

The strike follows unsuccessful negotiations between SEMAF and Renfe over unresolved issues concerning railway safety and staffing. SEMAF claims that commitments made under a February 9, 2026 agreement have not been fully implemented, especially regarding operational safety procedures, staff levels, maintenance, severe weather protocols, and psychological support for drivers. Renfe contests these claims,

stating that it has fulfilled its responsibilities agreed earlier this year and continues to work on outstanding measures.

Impact on Passengers and Services

Passengers on affected Renfe services can expect reduced availability or cancellations during the strike. This includes Spain’s AVE high-speed network, Avlo low-cost high-speed trains, regional, long-distance, and Cercanías commuter routes such as Rodalies in Catalonia. Specific service reductions remain unconfirmed, with no final nationwide operating schedule or exact train cancellations published. Authorities may impose minimum service requirements, allowing some trains to operate despite the strike.

Renfe passengers holding tickets for October 29 will be able to request ticket changes or refunds without

incurring fees, dependent on the status of their specific services. Passengers are advised not to cancel reservations before official confirmation of cancellations, especially when holding non-refundable fares.

Ouigo Strike Action

Separately, SEMAF announced strike action for drivers at Ouigo high-speed services on October 30, November 2, 6, 9, and December 4 and 8. These strikes are related to alleged failures by Ouigo to comply with labor agreements. Ouigo operates high-speed trains linking Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, and Málaga. The Ouigo strike dates coincide with periods of typically increased rail travel demand around the All Saints’ holidays and other busy dates, potentially adding

further disruption to Spain’s rail network.

Timing and Operational Context

The October 29 strike falls during a busy holiday period, including Halloween and the lead-up to All Saints’ holidays, a peak time for rail travel in Spain. Renfe announced on October 21 that operational constraints related to the impending strike prevented the scheduling of additional late-night services after the October 28 Copa del Rey football match between Xerez and Cádiz.

Since February 2026, Renfe has been recruiting up to 1,200 employees to address staffing needs and stated on October 16 that it completed 17 of 24 agreed safety-related measures, with others awaiting action by

regulators or third parties. The unresolved issues cited by SEMAF remain points of contention ahead of the strike.
