Storm Austen triggered extensive flight cancellations and diversions across Western Europe on Friday, 23 October 2026. Airports in the Channel Islands, Western France, Belgium, and the Netherlands reported significant disruptions due to severe wind conditions.

Flight Cancellations in Channel Islands and France

Jersey Airport registered 41 cancelled flights on 23 October, comprising 22 departures and 19 arrivals amid red wind warnings forecasting gusts of 61 to 70 knots. Guernsey Airport also experienced major operational disturbances, with services resuming the following day. In Western France, Brest Airport cancelled 11 flight movements and Caen Airport cancelled three. Transavia departures from Nantes Airport were affected by cancellations, further reflecting the

storm’s impact on the region.

Diversions at Paris and Brussels Airports

Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport saw flights diverted due to Storm Austen, with many aircraft redirected to Paris Orly Airport and other alternate locations. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot confirmed these diversions and anticipated additional rerouted flights as conditions persisted. Brussels Airport handled multiple diverted flights; several flights originally destined for French airports landed at Brussels (Zaventem), while an incoming Brussels Airlines flight from Marseille was diverted to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Brussels also experienced an outgoing flight diverted to an alternative airport, though no general airport closure occurred in Belgium.

KLM Flight Cancellations and Netherlands Conditions

KLM cancelled 20 flights on

23 October and pre-announced 22 more cancellations for 24 October due to strong winds affecting the Netherlands. Despite these airline-specific cancellations, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport reported limited overall disruption, with no other carrier cancelling flights for the same weather event, according to a KLM spokesperson.

Official Statements and Weather Causes

Jersey authorities issued a red warning on wind speeds ahead of Storm Austen’s arrival, anticipating gusts between 61 and 70 knots. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot detailed aircraft diversions from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Paris Orly and other facilities. Brussels Airport spokeswoman Ihsane Chioua Lekhli provided information on diverted flights landing at Brussels and departing

flights rerouted elsewhere. The cancellations and diversions resulted mainly from the strong winds associated with Storm Austen crossing Northern France and the Low Countries.

Impact Beyond Air Travel and Forecast

In addition to air travel interruptions, rail services were disrupted, trees were felled, and road restrictions were imposed in affected regions. Following Storm Austen, a second weather event, Storm Boelo, was forecast to impact Northern Ireland, Scotland, and parts of northern England over the weekend, posing a risk of further transport disruptions as airlines worked to recover their schedules.

Passenger Disruption and Airport Access

Passengers faced cancellations and diversions particularly on routes serving the Channel Islands, Western France, and the Netherlands.

Diversions of Paris- and Brussels-bound flights complicated travel plans, while disrupted rail links and road restrictions added difficulties for accessing airports. Airlines such as KLM adjusted schedules proactively in response to the ongoing severe weather conditions.
