SITA and Qatar Airways introduced Fast Pass, an opt-in facial biometric system, at Hamad International Airport that integrates more than 700 passenger touchpoints across check-in, bag drop, security, and boarding. Passengers register via the Qatar Airways mobile app or self-service kiosks, enabling facial recognition to replace physical boarding passes for the entire journey.
Biometric Deployment Expands in UAE Airports
Dubai International Airport employs a ‘Red Carpet Smart Corridor’ powered by Paravision’s facial recognition technology with emaratech, capable of processing over 10 passengers simultaneously. Emirates installed over 200 biometric boarding cameras at the airport in 2017. Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport uses facial recognition technology at five
of nine passenger touchpoints, with Etihad Airways actively testing facial ID for boarding and lounge access.
Middle East Market Growth and Industry Trends
Dubai International Airport served over 95.2 million international passengers in 2025, fueling investment in biometric technologies to improve throughput. The Airport Show 2026 set for Dubai in October will spotlight next-generation biometric airport solutions amid anticipated Middle East passenger growth to 240 million. The International Air Transport Association projects biometric confirmation can reduce passenger processing times by up to 40 percent. Market forecasts predict the biometric technology sector will reach $150.58 billion by 2030, with airport biometrics services expanding to $276.56 billion by 2032.
By 2027, 75% of airports are expected to implement biometric systems covering check-in, baggage drop, boarding, and border control.
Global Biometric Initiatives in Asia and Africa
Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport in Kazakhstan is trialing biometric registration for self-service check-in and electronic passport integration. Vietnam’s Noi Bai International Airport processes approximately 2,000 to 3,000 passengers daily using biometric check-in kiosks synchronized to expedite security and boarding. Nigeria’s Federal Airports Authority is deploying V-Pass, an AI-powered facial recognition identity verification system developed by Verxid Technologies and implemented by Barnksforte Technologies, to enhance passenger identity confirmation and system analytics.
Challenges to Biometric System Scaling
Despite numerous trials, few biometric passenger processing systems have achieved scalable,
interoperable operation globally due to unresolved governance, liability, funding, and ownership issues. Industry experts note that advancing biometric adoption will require strategic alignment and robust governance frameworks to build trusted digital identity models.
Selim Bouri, President for Middle East, Africa & Türkiye at SITA, stated: “The way people move through airports is changing, and trusted digital identity is at the center of it. This is the model the industry will build on: travel that is faster and simpler because it is built on trust.” Majed Al Joker, COO of Dubai Airports, emphasized the need for “consistent, measurable improvements in how
guests move through our terminals.” The International Air Transport Association estimates biometric verification can reduce passenger processing times by up to 40 percent.
