CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive has delivered the first seven three-car trainsets for Shanghai’s new metro Line 22. A total of 40 trainsets have been ordered by the Shanghai metro operator, marking its first contract that includes a long-term maintenance agreement for rolling stock.
All train vehicles are powered and incorporate energy-saving silicon carbide auxiliary converters along with oil-free air compressors aimed at reducing maintenance needs. The trains are capable of reaching 120 km/h and operate under GoA4 unattended automation. They feature automatic coupling and uncoupling systems, allowing flexible adjustment of train lengths to match passenger demand.
The design of the
train exterior and interior draws inspiration from Chongming Island’s natural environment and Chinese cultural heritage. Motifs include terraced fields and reed beds, reflecting the island’s landscape.
Line 22, previously known as the Chongming Line, will span 43 km from Jinji Road station in Pudong to Yu’an on Chongming Island, passing through Changxing Island. Of the total length, 41 km will run underground. The line will have eight stations and will feature the longest river crossing on any Chinese metro network, crossing the River Yangtze.
The Shanghai metro operator plans to open Line 22 by the end of 2026. Its cross-river
routing represents the first metro line in Shanghai to traverse the River Yangtze, improving connectivity between Pudong and Chongming Island.
