On June 28, 2026, severe thunderstorms led to significant disruption at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports, causing widespread flight delays and cancellations. This sudden change in weather conditions brought an abrupt end to the UK heatwave, affecting airport operations.
More than 900 flights were delayed or cancelled across the two airports due to the storm. As a result, around 40,000 passengers experienced travel interruptions and were stranded as flights were unable to depart or arrive on schedule. Travelers at both airports should anticipate extended waiting times and disrupted connections throughout the day.
