A Royal Caribbean cruise ship employee was found treading water about 20 miles off the coast of Newport Beach, California, in early November 2026. Two Newport Beach fishermen, Sean Norton and Grant Garrett, rescued the man while returning from a fishing near Catalina Island on a Friday around noon.

The man identified himself as a pianist aboard Royal Caribbean’s 14-deck cruise ship Ovation of the Seas. Norton said, “Grant and I each got an arm and lifted him up.” After the rescue, an emergency maritime call was made and Newport Beach lifeguards responded to assist.

Investigation and Survival Factors

The U.S. Coast Guard is

investigating how the employee ended up overboard. Battalion Chief Adam Yacenda stated the incident occurred approximately 15 to 20 miles offshore in the middle of the ocean. The man was likely in the water for about nine hours before rescue.

The water temperature was around 76 degrees Fahrenheit due to a strong super El Niño year, which improved survival chances. Norton noted, “You have this crazy super El Niño year. This guy was in the water for probably 10 hours, but the water’s 76 degrees. A different year, no way he makes it.” The rescued man was found in shock,

hospitalized, and is expected to recover according to the Coast Guard.

Grant Garrett recalled, “I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s a human being. Stop the boat; let’s get all of our lines in.” Norton added, “The only thing he said to me was, ‘Thank you. I thought I was gonna die.'” The rescue highlights local fishermen’s role in maritime emergency responses near Southern California.
