The MSC Poesia cruise ship was detained by the U.S. Coast Guard at PortMiami on November 1, 2026, following identification of deficiencies with systems on board during a Port State Control Examination.

MSC Cruises announced on November 3, 2026, that it would cancel the MSC Poesia’s scheduled 11-night Caribbean voyage originally set from November 1 to November 12, 2026. The cruise line cited an unresolved regulatory matter that prevented the sailing from proceeding.

Passengers were already aboard the MSC Poesia when it was detained. MSC Cruises provided a full refund of cruise fares, a 100% future cruise credit, and reimbursement

for certain travel expenses. Travelers had until noon on November 5 to arrange their return travel from PortMiami.

The Panama-flagged MSC Poesia, which has a passenger capacity of over 2,550, was scheduled to call at ports in Jamaica, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Belize during the Caribbean itinerary.

Official Statements on Detention and Cancellation

Capt. Frank Florio, Commander of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Miami, said, “The Coast Guard cannot currently comment on the specifics of an ongoing Port State Control Examination, but we have identified deficiencies with systems on board the vessel that we are addressing with MSC.”

An MSC Cruises spokesperson said, “Prior to

departure, a regulatory matter arose that required resolution. Despite our efforts to address the matter, we were unable to resolve it in time for the sailing to proceed. Guests will receive a full refund of their cruise fare, and we are providing support to assist with their journey home.” The company also expressed regret for the disruption to passengers’ holiday plans.

U.S. Coast Guard’s Regulatory Role and Past MSC Detentions

The U.S. Coast Guard inspects foreign-flagged commercial vessels at U.S. ports to ensure compliance with international safety, security, and environmental regulations. Vessels with safety or regulatory deficiencies can be detained and prevented from departing until corrective actions are completed.

MSC Opera, another vessel in the MSC Cruises fleet, was detained in 2011 by UK maritime authorities over safety concerns including stability and emergency preparedness, underscoring the Coast Guard’s and maritime authorities’ role in enforcing safety standards.
