Spain’s national rail operator Renfe is preparing to request approval to operate Talgo Series 106 Avril and Series 107 trainsets in Portugal, according to Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente. Past efforts to authorize the S106 trainsets on cross-border routes into France have stalled, while Spain and Portugal aim to strengthen railway connections between their networks. Both countries share the 1,668 mm broad gauge standard, facilitating compatibility with Portuguese infrastructure and future high-speed lines planned between Lisboa and Porto.
Renfe’s €132 Million Upgrade and Operating Timeline
Renfe is allocating €132 million to Talgo to equip 15 of its standard-gauge S106 trainsets with variable-gauge systems, enabling them to operate
on Portugal’s broad gauge tracks. Post-upgrade, all 30 S106 sets will feature dual-gauge capability. This modernization targets operational approval for international services by the early 2030s, coinciding with the anticipated completion of the high-speed rail link between Spain and Portugal through Badajoz.
Electrification and Technical Progress on Series 107 Sets
To facilitate cross-border services ahead of the high-speed line’s launch, all three conventional railway connections between Portugal and Spain are to be electrified at 25 kV 50 Hz. The 13 Series 107 trainsets will comprise 26 newly manufactured variable-gauge power cars from Talgo and 156 refurbished Series VII former sleeping cars. Delivery of these Series 107 sets is
approximately two years behind schedule, with four currently undergoing testing.
Official Remarks and Market Suitability
Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente noted on August 18, 2026, that EU pressure to improve rail connectivity between Spain and France has had minimal impact, causing Renfe’s French expansion efforts to pause. In contrast, Spain and Portugal maintain a clear objective to link their railway systems. Puente described the Talgo S106 and S107 trainsets as well suited for the Portuguese market due to gauge compatibility and infrastructure plans.
Cross-Border Service Prospects for Travelers
Upon regulatory approval, Renfe’s Talgo S106 and S107 trains will be available for services between Spain and Portugal. Meanwhile, the electrification upgrades
of existing conventional cross-border lines will allow these trains to operate between the two countries before the high-speed corridor opens in the early 2030s.
