On July 10, 2026, Qatar Airways introduced a biometric Fast Pass system at Hamad International Airport in Doha, enabling eligible passengers to use facial recognition across multiple airport touchpoints instead of traditional boarding passes.

Biometric Touchpoints and Enrolment Process

The Fast Pass system integrates approximately 700 biometric touchpoints throughout Hamad International Airport, covering check-in, self-service bag drop, security screening, airport lounges, and boarding gates. Passengers can enroll in the system either through the Qatar Airways mobile application after check-in or at self-service kiosks near Row 3 within the airport.

Enrolment requires passengers to provide a valid passport and a selfie taken against a plain background.

This creates a secure digital identity by linking facial biometrics with the passenger’s passport, boarding pass, and journey details. After enrolment, travellers verify their identity by looking into biometric cameras at various checkpoints instead of presenting physical or digital boarding documents.

Passenger Experience and Data Management

The Fast Pass system is designed to streamline the passenger journey by reducing the need for frequent presentation of boarding passes. Enrolment is conducted once, and the biometric profile is reusable on subsequent qualifying journeys departing from Doha. Travellers must carry their passports as a backup if biometric verification fails or additional immigration checks arise.

Data management varies by

enrolment method: passengers registering at airport kiosks have biometric data stored only for the duration of their trip, with automatic deletion occurring 24 hours after departure. Those using the mobile app retain their biometric profile securely on their own device, with journey-specific data shared with the airport only when activating Fast Pass for a particular flight. Passengers maintain control over their biometric data and can delete it at any time via the app.

Eligibility, Participation, and Expansion Plans

Participation in Fast Pass is voluntary and available only to Qatar Airways passengers at least 18 years old, holding valid passports, and beginning their journeys at Hamad

International Airport. Traditional document checks remain accessible for those opting out of biometric verification. Currently, Fast Pass applies solely to eligible Qatar Airways flights departing from Doha, with passengers informed of eligibility during the check-in process.

Hamad International Airport plans to extend the biometric Fast Pass system to other airlines operating from the Doha hub in the future, indicating a broader rollout beyond the initial Qatar Airways implementation.

Biometric Technology Adoption in Aviation

Qatar Airways’ Fast Pass deployment follows similar biometric initiatives globally. Emirates employs facial recognition services at Dubai International Airport. Japan’s Haneda and Narita airports use comparable “Face Express” schemes. In the United

States, the TSA has expanded its PreCheck Touchless ID program to many airports, enabling eligible travellers to pass security using facial recognition instead of physical IDs.

According to the 2025 International Air Transport Association (IATA) Global Passenger Survey, 50% of travellers have utilized biometric technology during their airport experience. Among these users, 85% report high satisfaction, and 74% express willingness to share biometric data to reduce document checks during check-in, security, border control, and boarding stages.
