On Sunday, 25 October 2026, a power surge struck Stansted Airport in the United Kingdom, disrupting key airport systems including security controls, baggage handling, and immigration services. The electrical failure also affected the local area surrounding the airport.
Power Surge Disrupts Airport Systems
The power surge caused a temporary blackout of essential airport electrical systems, leading to operational stoppages in security checkpoints, baggage processing, and immigration controls. Airport staff worked throughout the day to restore functionality.
Significant Passenger Delays and Queues
Hundreds of passengers were stranded at Stansted Airport due to the outage, with long queues forming in the departures area as travelers were unable to clear security. After approximately
two hours without an update, the airport issued a public announcement via tannoy attributing the delays to electrical failures affecting baggage, security, and immigration systems. Some passengers expressed frustration on social media over the wait and delayed communication.
One passenger said, “After 2 hours Stansted Airport’s tannoy finally made a public announcement that electrical systems related to baggage, security and immigration are not working but staff are trying to fix things. We are thanked for our patience. They should have done this ages ago.” Another asked on X (formerly Twitter) about the status of a 17:05 flight, to which airport
staff responded that teams were working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible and advised passengers to alert staff when boarding commenced.
Airport Response and System Restoration
A Stansted Airport spokesperson confirmed that all systems were back in service after the power surge affected the airport and the local area. They said, “Due to a power surge earlier today that affected the airport and local area, a number of airport systems were temporarily impacted. All systems are now back in service with operational teams working hard to provide support to passengers.” The spokesperson also noted that some systems initially remained affected and were not
operating at full capacity, specifically security and baggage systems, but efforts continued to fully restore all services.
Context of Storm-Related Power Outages
The power surge occurred amid stormy weather linked to Storm Boelo, which caused widespread power outages across parts of the UK, including the local area around Stansted Airport. On the same day, other travel disruptions were reported, including flight cancellations and diversions at Leeds Bradford Airport and major railway delays and closures in Scotland caused by flooding and fallen trees. Network Rail Scotland implemented speed restrictions and shut sections of rail lines in response to the adverse weather conditions.
