Philadelphia International Airport recorded more than 290 flight delays and 96 cancellations on Sunday, July 19, 2026, continuing disruptions caused by severe thunderstorms on Saturday, July 18, 2026. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground stops and delays at Philadelphia and other airports nationwide due to the storms.

Impact on Passengers and Flight Operations

Passengers experienced extended delays and cancellations, with American Airlines travelers especially affected. Some passengers were stranded on planes for about four hours before being told to disembark after flight cancellations. Travelers scrambled to rebook flights amid limited availability, with some, including passengers Ariella Mafuta and Laura Buschnyj, forced to seek overnight accommodations.

Karl Skotleski, traveling with family, said, “From what they told us, it was weather-related. I haven’t really seen any evidence to it being that way.” Mafuta described waiting four hours on a plane before cancellation, and Buschnyj said, “I’ve been here for long enough, had to obviously find accommodations and spend the night. All I’m trying to do is just go home.”

Official Statements on Causes and Ongoing Disruptions

Airport spokesperson Heather Redfern stated, “The airport isn’t given the reasons for those delays and cancellations. However, we believe that many are a result of yesterday’s weather issues in Philadelphia and across the country. The FAA had issued

ground stops and ground delays at PHL and other airports due to thunderstorms throughout Saturday.” Operational impacts continued through Sunday, contributing to over 300 flight disruptions.

Numbers and FAA Ground Stops

On July 19, 2026, Philadelphia International Airport experienced more than 290 delays and 96 cancellations. These disruptions were influenced by the FAA’s ground stops and ground delays imposed on Saturday, July 18, which affected airline scheduling and passenger flow despite improving weather conditions.
