The first six high-speed train platforms at Old Oak Common railway station in west London have been completed underground at a depth of 450 meters as part of the HS2 expansion project.
Platform Arrangement and Rail Services
Old Oak Common will have 14 platforms: six underground for HS2’s high-speed trains and eight at ground level for conventional lines, including the Elizabeth line, Great Western Main Line, and Heathrow Express.
Passenger Capacity and Connectivity
The station is designed to serve an estimated 250,000 passengers daily, connecting London with the Midlands, northern England, and Scotland. It will provide routes to more than 100 destinations and be the 42nd stop on the
Elizabeth line, integrating the West Coast Main Line and Great Western routes.
Construction Timeline and Progress
Construction of the underground high-speed platforms began in April 2025. The first overground platform slabs are expected to be installed in late 2026, with station roof installation planned for early 2027.
Kim Kapur, HS2’s Old Oak Common area director, stated, “Going into the underground box at Old Oak Common, you can immediately visualise how it will look as an operational station, including where passengers will board or alight HS2’s brand new trains. The scale of the work – and the station now taking shape – is remarkable.” She
added, “However, there is much more to do. This includes construction of the conventional, surface-level platforms, completion of tunnels either side of the underground box and installation of the impressive station roof, which will begin next year.” Kapur also noted, “Old Oak Common will be transformative for the local area, providing a new transport hub, with a new vibrant neighbourhood developing around it.”
