NATS System Fault Triggers Nearly 1,000 Flight Cancellations Across UK on Sept 8

Flight Cancellations Leave Australian Passengers Overnight at Heathrow

Nearly 1,000 flights were cancelled on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, across several UK airports including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, and regional airports in Scotland and Ireland due to a technical failure in the UK’s air traffic control system.

The disruptions caused by the flight data processing system operated by National Air Traffic Services (NATS) forced widespread cancellations and delays, with effects continuing into Wednesday, 9 September.

Australian Passengers Stranded Overnight at Heathrow

Australian travelers like Monique and Frank Whiting from Perth found themselves stranded overnight at Heathrow after their Icelandair flight was cancelled. Passengers on the affected Icelandair flight remained onboard for over four

hours before being ordered to disembark due to lack of available ground equipment such as ramps.

Passengers were asked to arrange their own accommodation with offers of limited reimbursement from airlines like Icelandair, but many nearby hotels were fully booked. The Whiting family reported difficulty finding lodging with many cancellations already in place.

NATS Fault and Response

The cause of the disruption was a fault in the flight data processing system handled by NATS, which processes flight plans and operational data essential for managing UK airspace. NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe apologized for the incident and announced a full investigation into the failure.

reported that operations stabilized on Wednesday but warned the backlog of flights and repositioning of aircraft and crews would prolong recovery. Rolfe affirmed that despite this fault, NATS systems remain fit for purpose, and coordination between NATS, airlines, and airports continues to support recovery efforts.

Airline Impacts and Passenger Delays

British Airways cancelled or diverted more than 100 flights due to the disruption. EasyJet cancelled about 200 flights, while Ryanair cancelled over 50 flights and reported delays affecting more than 65,000 passengers, some enduring delays of up to eight hours.

Passengers faced long waiting periods, crowded terminals, and difficulties in rebooking. Some flights were cancelled

or delayed as airlines repositioned aircraft and crews following the operational outage.

Passenger Hardships and Official Statements

Passengers endured prolonged stays onboard aircraft and crowded terminals. Debbie Payne, another Australian passenger caught in the disruption, said, “There were people on planes who couldn’t get off because there were no ramps,” and noted particular hardship for travelers with limited English and young children.

Monique Whiting remarked, “We knew pretty early on that there was a bit of a delay, and I could see through the window that there was a bunch of planes lining up to go.” She added, “A bunch of other things had already

been cancelled, and a lot of the close-by accommodation was obviously already booked out.”

British Airways and EasyJet issued statements about their cancellations and urged passengers to check the status of their flights. NATS expressed regret and reiterated apologies to passengers, airlines, and airports affected by the system failure.

Context of Heathrow and Previous UK Air Traffic Disruptions

London Heathrow, the world’s seventh-busiest airport by passenger numbers, served over 84 million travelers in 2025. The NATS system failure follows a pattern of recurring air traffic control outages causing severe disruptions in the UK.

Similar incidents occurred in August 2023, when a comparable NATS fault led to hundreds of flight

cancellations during a peak travel period. Additional disruptions in recent years include power outages and global IT failures impacting UK airport operations.
