Construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor has reached a milestone with over 100 kilometers of piers completed in Maharashtra on the 135.45-kilometer section. About 124 kilometers of this route in Maharashtra is being built on elevated tracks to minimize land acquisition issues, accelerating progress toward the corridor’s first operational segment in Gujarat by 2027.
Infrastructure Development Includes Large Bridges and Elevated Stations
The corridor in Maharashtra features three elevated stations under construction at Thane, Virar, and Boisar. The Thane station concourse is positioned roughly 12 meters above ground level and integrates design elements to protect nearby mangrove ecosystems. The route includes 36 bridges and crossings to navigate
the region’s geography, including a 2.32-kilometer-long bridge over the Vaitarna River, a 460-meter span over the Ulhas River, and a 510-meter bridge crossing the Jagani River. To support this construction, the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL) has deployed nine casting yards, seven full-span launching gantries, and eight segmental launching gantries.
Technical Specifications and Indigenous Trainset Production
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is designed to reach speeds of up to 280 kilometers per hour with the initial trains, while future models plan to operate at 350 kilometers per hour. BEML Limited has been contracted by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai to manufacture two stainless steel,
eight-coach trainsets, coded B-28, under a ₹866.87 crore deal. These fully air-conditioned trainsets will have reclining and rotatable seats and facilities for differently-abled passengers, tailored to Indian climatic conditions.
Delays and Financing Due to Land Acquisition Challenges
The project has experienced delays and increased costs largely driven by land acquisition issues and statutory clearance delays in Maharashtra. Elevated construction, comprising over 124 kilometers of the Maharashtra section, has been prioritized to reduce agricultural land use and avoid urban disruption. Originally estimated at ₹1.1 lakh crore, the project’s cost has risen to nearly ₹2.1 lakh crore. Funding and technological expertise are primarily provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency
(JICA).
Passenger Considerations and Future Rail Corridor Plans
Passengers should anticipate a premium rail service with integrated last-mile connectivity via shuttle and ride-sharing services at elevated stations such as Thane. The ticketing and rebooking policies will differ from traditional Indian Railways offerings, with official delay compensation policies pending release by NHSRCL. The first operational section between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat is planned for 2027, while full corridor completion is targeted by 2030. Additional high-speed rail corridors proposed by Indian Railways include routes connecting Bengaluru with Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has indicated the next-generation bullet trains will operate at speeds of 350
kilometers per hour, marking a step toward establishing precision transit in Indian rail travel through enhanced speed, safety, and passenger comfort.
