Marriott International announced the opening of its first hotel in Laos on November 4, 2026, with La Résidence Phou Vao, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Luang Prabang. This launch raised Marriott’s Asia-Pacific portfolio excluding China to 800 properties.
Location and Property Details
La Résidence Phou Vao occupies three acres of tropical gardens atop Phou Vao hill, situated approximately two kilometres from Luang Prabang’s historic centre. The resort is positioned within the town’s UNESCO World Heritage zone, offering views of local temples, mountains, and where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers converge.
It lies about four kilometres from Luang Prabang International Airport and
11 kilometres from the China–Laos railway station, providing accessible transportation links for international visitors.
Architecture, Suites and Amenities
The resort maintains its original architectural design and landscaped gardens, featuring 36 suites with interiors inspired by Lao craftsmanship and French design elements. Suite categories include garden-view, mountain-view, and temple-view rooms, with some suites offering private terraces or separate living rooms.
Notable design aspects include handwoven textiles, rosewood accents, spacious bathrooms outfitted with terrazzo bathtubs, and a 13-metre cliff-edge infinity pool overlooking the surrounding landscape.
Dining, Spa and Cultural Offerings
The hotel’s Mekong Spa delivers treatments based on Lao healing traditions, augmented by sauna and relaxation facilities. Dining options center around
La Brasserie de la Résidence, which pairs French cuisine with locally sourced ingredients and Lao culinary influences.
Guests can participate in cultural experiences such as traditional blessing ceremonies and local culinary activities designed to connect them with Luang Prabang’s cultural heritage.
Marriott Integration and Market Context
La Résidence Phou Vao joined Marriott’s Luxury Collection following renovations to its interiors, dining concepts, and guest services, marking Marriott’s debut in Laos without constructing a new property. The resort is now accessible via Marriott’s global reservation system and the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, subject to participation rules.
Luang Prabang is recognized as a prime cultural destination in Laos,
famous for its Buddhist temples, traditional architecture, and riverside scenery. The addition of this resort expands Marriott’s footprint in Southeast Asia’s emerging markets, aligning with its strategy to grow luxury offerings while preserving local cultural identities.
