
A power failure lasting approximately 90 seconds at Network Rail’s operations centre in Manchester caused widespread signalling disruptions across the North West England rail network. The outage led to trains stopping while control systems were rebooted and some signalling equipment was replaced due to damage.

Network Rail, the publicly owned body responsible for operating Britain’s railway infrastructure, confirmed the incident originated at its Manchester centre, which controls a significant portion of the region’s rail traffic. Chris Wright, north-west route director at Network Rail, said the power cut duration did not reflect the total time affected, explaining some communication systems failed
to respond as expected and required reconfiguration and replacement. He added, “We’ve got to work really hard very quickly now to understand why that’s the case.” Network Rail has launched an investigation and apologized to passengers.

Signalling systems analogous to traffic lights for trains were compromised, necessitating emergency halts. The subsequent need to reboot these systems, along with the replacement of damaged parts, resulted in delays and cancellations that persisted for several days throughout North West England.
