A man was reported missing after going overboard from the MS Ambition approximately 36 nautical miles off the east coast of Scotland near Arbroath at 08:35 on Friday, 21 August 2026. His body was recovered later the same day following an extensive multi-agency search operation.
MS Ambition’s Solar Eclipse Cruise and Route
The MS Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Lines, was returning to Dundee following a solar eclipse cruise that included stops in Iceland and the Faroe Islands. On the day of the incident, the ship docked at Lerwick in the Shetland Islands before sailing back to Dundee. After arriving in Dundee, the vessel departed for Newcastle
shortly after 18:00.
Official Statements and Search Operations
Police Scotland confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious and that the deceased’s next of kin have been informed. Search efforts involved Coastguard aircraft based in Prestwick and Carlisle, a commercial search and rescue helicopter, as well as lifeboat crews from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry. Coastguard teams from Dundee, Arbroath, and St Andrews also participated in the operation.
