A man died after falling overboard from the MS Ambition cruise ship approximately 36 nautical miles off Arbroath, on Scotland’s east coast, at 08:35 on Friday, 21 August 2026. Police Scotland confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious.
Multi-agency Search Efforts
A major multi-agency search was launched, involving coastguard aircraft from Prestwick and Carlisle, a commercial search and rescue helicopter, lifeboat crews from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry, and coastguard teams from Dundee, Arbroath, and St Andrews. The man’s body was recovered later that same day.
Cruise Itinerary and Ship Movements
The MS Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Lines, had been returning to Dundee after a solar
eclipse cruise with stops in Iceland and the Faroe Islands. On the day of the incident, the ship docked in Lerwick before reaching Dundee, and then departed Dundee shortly after 18:00 to sail to Newcastle, England.
Police Statement
Police Scotland stated the death is not suspicious and confirmed that the deceased’s next of kin have been informed. No further details regarding the man’s identity or the circumstances of the fall have been released.
