A man was reported missing overboard from Ambassador Cruise Line’s cruise ship MS Ambition on 21 August 2026 while sailing from Lerwick, Shetland, to Dundee, Scotland. The incident took place in the North Sea, approximately 36 nautical miles east of Arbroath, Angus, around 8:35am.
Coastguard and Police Launch Extensive Search Operation
Following the report, HM Coastguard, Police Scotland, lifeboat crews from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry, a Coast Guard helicopter and plane, and police patrols conducted a large-scale search and rescue mission. Police Scotland received the overboard alert at about 8:55am, with the ship located roughly 40 nautical miles from Anstruther, Fife.
Body Recovered and Family Notified
Several hours after the missing person
was reported, a body was recovered from the sea. Police Scotland confirmed that formal identification had not yet occurred but the family of the missing man had been informed. Authorities continued working with Ambassador Cruise Line and maritime agencies including the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre and Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Passenger Impact and Ship Schedule
Approximately 1,000 passengers onboard MS Ambition were briefly held on the ship while search efforts continued. Disembarkation was delayed but allowed to proceed around 11:30am when the ship docked in Dundee. The captain and crew conducted a thorough ship-wide search upon arrival. MS Ambition left Dundee later that evening en
route to Newcastle, with its turnaround schedule slightly delayed due to the incident.

MS Ambition was on a two-week solar eclipse cruise covering Shetland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands before returning from Lerwick to Dundee. Passengers praised the crew’s professionalism and calm handling of the situation, despite having to rearrange onward travel plans. The vessel has previously been used by the Scottish government to provide temporary housing for Ukrainian refugees.
Police Scotland stated, “Around 8.55am on Friday, 21 August, 2026, we received a report that a man had gone overboard from a cruise ship in the North Sea.”
The cause of the man going overboard remains undisclosed, and no further details have been released due to the ongoing police investigation.
