Southwest Airlines experienced a system outage on October 9, 2026, causing widespread operational disruptions. By 9:15 a.m. that day, about 900 Southwest flights were delayed across the United States, with 43 cancellations reported nationwide, according to FlightAware data.

At Dallas Love Field (DAL), where Southwest Airlines is headquartered, the impact was notable though less severe. The airport recorded 56 delayed flights and 7 cancellations as of 9:15 a.m. The interruption originated from a brief system outage involving Southwest’s vendor Amadeus, which oversees the airline’s reservation system and other critical functions.

Operational Response and Official Statements

In response to the outage, Southwest Airlines manually processed baggage

checks and boarding procedures while working to restore full system functionality. A Southwest spokesperson said the airline continued these manual operations to minimize further delays. The spokesperson apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized that the safety of customers and employees remains the airline’s top priority.

“The airline continued to check baggage and board flights manually while full functionality was restored,” the spokesperson said. “We apologize to our Customers for any inconvenience and are working to get them to their destinations as quickly as possible. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our Customers and Employees.”

Additional Operational Impacts at Dallas Love Field

Lauren Rounds,

spokesperson for the City of Dallas Department of Aviation, reported that Southwest informed the Love Field operations team of an intermittent internal network outage on the morning of October 9. This network issue affected boarding pass printing and mobile app scanning, complicating routine boarding processes. These technical difficulties were directly linked to the system interruption involving vendor Amadeus.
