The 16th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) took place from October 6 to 8, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, Kenya. The three-day event gathered more than 10,000 tourism delegates and industry professionals representing over 40 countries. The expo hosted upwards of 400 exhibitors and welcomed over 250 international, quality-vetted buyers.
Expo Advances Kenya’s Five Million International Visitor Target
MKTE 2026 aimed to accelerate Kenya’s objective of reaching five million international tourist arrivals annually by 2027. The event’s theme focused on “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism.” It highlighted how AI and smart tourism technologies are reshaping travel planning and service
delivery across Kenya’s tourism sector.
Core Event Features. Exhibitors, Buyers, and B2B Engagement
The expo included business-to-business meetings, tourism seminars, and familiarisation trips, providing a platform for direct contract negotiations between local suppliers and international distributors. More than 250 international buyers were hosted for product tours in key locations. The event supported Nairobi’s hotels, transit systems, and dining services by the high volume of delegates attending.
Participation of Key Stakeholders and Official Statements
Key participants included the Kenya Tourism Board, Kenya MICE Club, Kenya MICE Association, and the Tour Operators Society of Kenya. June Chepkemei, CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board, noted that the expo’s program was guided by market intelligence and consumer demand data
to convert visitor interest into arrivals. She stated, “Every element of this year’s MKTE programme, from the buyer selection to the seminar agenda, is informed by data and consumer demand intelligence. We know what the interests of our visitors are and what it takes to convert interest into arrivals.”
Duncan Muriuki, Chairman of the Kenya MICE Association, emphasized the sector’s economic potential. He said, “MICE is the next frontier for growing tourism revenue. Our focus is not just on increasing visitor numbers, but on attracting high-value business events that deliver greater economic impact. Through the Kenya MICE Club, we are
working with government and the private sector to develop competitive bidding packages.” Muriuki added that Kenya’s existing infrastructure and leisure attractions form a strong base to attract more global events.
Raymond Cheruiyot, Chairman of the Tour Operators Society of Kenya, credited government visa reforms and expanded air connectivity for strengthening Kenya’s tourism. He said, “The Government’s efforts to improve visa access and expand air connectivity have created a strong foundation for tourism growth.” MKTE offers a platform to showcase Kenya’s advancements in digital tourism and diverse offerings.
Strategic Sectors: MICE, Digital Infrastructure, and Connectivity
The expo underscored Kenya’s strategic focus on the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions
(MICE) sector to attract business travelers who contribute higher revenue through longer stays. Investments in upgraded conference venues in Nairobi and Mombasa support this aim.
Digital transformation initiatives include smart destination systems, AI-powered visitor analytics, and enhanced mobile payment platforms to streamline booking and services. These technologies aim to provide personalized itineraries and dynamic pricing. Moreover, government improvements in visa procedures and air connectivity facilitate easier access for international travelers.
Traveler Impact: Book Early, Embrace Sustainable Tourism
The influx of over 10,000 delegates to Nairobi for MKTE requires advanced planning by travelers to secure flights and accommodations due to high demand in early October. Visitors are encouraged
to use registered local guides to direct tourism spending towards conservation and community development projects.
Digital tools showcased at the expo will simplify trip booking, payments, and itinerary management for visitors. Kenya is expanding sustainable travel offerings, including eco-tours and community-guided walks, supported by improved infrastructure.
Kenya’s Positioning as a Smart Tourism Leader in East Africa
By integrating technology, innovation, and sustainable practices, Kenya positions itself as a leading smart tourism destination in East Africa. The MKTE strengthens the country’s role as the premier regional travel trade event and deepens collaboration between the Kenya Tourism Board and private sector stakeholders to promote the country internationally.
