The 16th Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) took place from October 6 to 8, 2026, at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, hosting over 10,000 delegates representing 40 countries. This marks the largest attendance in the event’s history, reflecting growing international interest in Kenya’s tourism sector.

The expo featured more than 400 exhibitors and attracted over 250 quality-vetted international buyers. This attendance represents a 30% rise compared to the 7,691 delegates recorded at MKTE 2025. The event supports Kenya’s tourism target of reaching 5 million tourists by the end of 2027.

The event was held under the theme “Digital Transformation and Artificial

Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism,” aligning with the global focus of World Tourism Day 2026. MKTE serves as a principal platform to drive Kenya’s tourism growth, leveraging digital innovation, big data, immersive technologies, and smart destination tools to enhance competitiveness.

Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei emphasized the role of data and consumer demand intelligence in shaping the MKTE program. She stated, “Every element of this year’s MKTE programme, from the buyer selection to the seminar agenda, is informed by data and consumer demand intelligence. We know what the interests of our visitors are and what it takes to

convert interest into arrivals.” Chepkemei highlighted that the event’s success relies on strong public-private partnerships central to Kenya’s tourism growth.

MICE Sector Spotlight

MKTE 2026 placed significant focus on Kenya’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, an essential pillar within the country’s tourism strategy. Kenya MICE Association Chair Duncan Muriuki explained that the association collaborates with government and private stakeholders to enhance Kenya’s global MICE competitiveness.

Muriuki said, “MICE is the next frontier for growing tourism revenue. Our focus is not just on increasing visitor numbers, but on attracting high-value business events that deliver greater economic impact. Through the Kenya MICE Club,

we are working with government and the private sector to develop competitive bidding packages that include destination incentives and a compelling value proposition.” He noted that Nairobi and Mombasa offer world-class facilities and strong ‘bleisure’ options, positioning Kenya to attract more global events and convert business travel into extended, higher-value visitor experiences.

Government Support and Industry Collaboration

Raymond Cheruiyot, Chairman of the Tour Operators Society of Kenya, acknowledged the impact of government initiatives on tourism growth. He stated, “The Government’s efforts to improve visa access and expand air connectivity have created a strong foundation for tourism growth.” Cheruiyot added that MKTE offers a critical platform

to present Kenya’s diverse tourism products, forge strategic partnerships, and strengthen the country’s profile in the global tourism market.

He further noted the private sector’s commitment to collaborating with the government to translate these opportunities into higher tourist arrivals, increased tourism revenue, and sustainable industry expansion.

Expo Programming and Trade Impact

MKTE 2026 included a comprehensive agenda featuring seminars, business-to-business meetings, and familiarisation trips designed to foster trade partnerships and drive measurable outcomes. The event emphasized integrating technology and smart destination management to improve Kenya’s tourism industry competitiveness while promoting inclusive growth.
