On Sunday, October 25, 2026, a power surge at London Stansted Airport disrupted security screening and baggage handling systems, leading to approximately 250 flight delays and six cancellations, according to flight-tracking data reported by Sky News. The incident affected both the airport and its surrounding local area.

Stansted Airport confirmed that all impacted systems were restored to operation by Sunday evening. Airport officials stated that operational teams continued assisting affected passengers after the technical issues were resolved. A spokesperson said, “Due to a power surge earlier today that affected the airport and local area, a number of airport systems were

temporarily impacted. We thank passengers for their patience and apologise for any disruption and inconvenience.”

Passengers at the airport encountered long queues at security checkpoints and baggage handling areas. Many experienced uncertainty regarding whether they would reach their departure gates on time. An airport staff assistant communicated via social media, “Hello. Our teams are working hard to restore normal operations and get passengers on their way as soon as possible. If your flight starts boarding, please flag down a member of staff. Thank you.”

The power surge coincided with independent rail disruptions caused by storm damage in Essex earlier that

weekend. Fallen trees damaged overhead electrical infrastructure near Stansted Mountfitchet on October 23 and 24, 2026, affecting rail connections between London and the airport. As a result, Stansted Express announced emergency engineering diversions before 7 a.m. on October 25, with trains diverted away from Tottenham Hale station, complicating access for passengers traveling to the airport via rail.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority provides guidelines on passenger rights related to cancellations and delays. Passengers with cancelled flights may be entitled to reimbursement or alternative transportation under UK air passenger rights legislation. Airlines must also provide appropriate care during qualifying cancellations. However,

airlines generally are not obligated to offer free replacement flights if passengers miss their flights due to security delays inside the airport.
