The Kenya Travel Expo 2026 will be held from October 6 to October 8 at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, marking the 16th edition of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE). The event is expected to gather over 10,000 delegates representing 40 countries. More than 400 exhibitors and upwards of 250 quality-vetted international buyers will participate in the three-day trade event, solidifying its status as East Africa’s leading tourism gathering.

Digital Transformation and MICE Sector Focus

The theme for MKTE 2026 is “Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Tourism,” aligning with the global emphasis of World Tourism Day 2026. The expo will explore advances

such as artificial intelligence, big data, immersive technology, digital payments, and smart destination tools. A significant focus will be placed on Kenya’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, with the Kenya MICE Club conducting sessions to promote Kenya as a competitive destination for international business events.

Kenya MICE Association Chair Duncan Muriuki highlighted the sector’s importance, stating it represents the next major opportunity for enhancing tourism revenue by attracting high-value business events. The Kenya MICE Club is collaborating with government and private entities to develop competitive bidding packages featuring destination incentives and compelling value propositions.

Attendance Growth and Tourism Targets

The projected participation in

MKTE 2026 reflects approximately a 30% increase over the 7,691 delegates who attended the 2025 event. This surge demonstrates rising confidence in Kenya’s tourism industry. The government’s ongoing reforms to ease visa access and expand air connectivity underpin this growth. Public-private partnerships remain a central component of efforts to position Kenya strongly in the global tourism market.

Kenya is aiming to attract five million international visitors by the end of 2027, driving the scale-up of trade events such as MKTE.

Data-Driven Strategies and Government-Private Collaboration

Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei stated that all aspects of MKTE 2026, from the selection of buyers to the

seminar agenda, are informed by market intelligence and consumer demand data. She said, “We know what the interests of our visitors are and what it takes to convert interest into arrivals. Our marketing campaigns both domestic and international are built on that evidence, and MKTE is the platform where we bring those insights to life for our partners.”

Tour Operators Society of Kenya Chair Raymond Cheruiyot welcomed government initiatives that improved visa access and extended air connectivity, calling them foundational to tourism growth. He described MKTE as a crucial platform to showcase Kenya’s diverse tourism offerings and foster international partnerships.

Expo Functions and Strategic Objectives

The expo will host seminars, business-to-business meetings, and familiarisation trips designed to strengthen partnerships and generate trade opportunities. Organisers intend to leverage MKTE 2026 to bring together government agencies, tourism boards, industry players, and technology partners to examine how digital innovation can accelerate tourism growth. A key goal is to increase Kenya’s competitiveness as a tourism destination while promoting inclusive growth within the sector.

Through these activities, the event seeks to attract more global business events and encourage extended stays by business travellers in Nairobi and Mombasa.
