Starting August 2026, Jinmao Group will independently operate its hotel business, ending its cooperation with Hyatt Group for the Hyatt Regency Chongming Shanghai Jinmao. The Chongming hotel has been renamed Shanghai Chongming Jinmao Yiyin Hotel and is now managed solely by Jinmao.

Jinmao’s Partnership History with Hyatt

Jinmao’s hotel business began its high-end market entry with the opening of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Jinmao Tower, Shanghai, in 2007. This landmark provided Jinmao with operational expertise through cooperation with Hyatt and other international brands. The Hyatt Regency Chongming Shanghai Jinmao, opened in 2014, was developed through this model, combining Chongming Island’s natural advantages with Hyatt’s

brand strength and management systems.

Self-Owned Brand Development

Since 2021, Jinmao has launched five self-owned hotel brands, including Jinmao Yiyin, Jinmao Joy, and Jinmao Pure, aiming to build a comprehensive brand system. Jinmao Joy targets urban business travel and conference needs and has properties in Ningbo and Jiangyin, where Ningbo Jinmao Joy maintains an average room rate of about 700 yuan and occupancy rates exceeding 60%. Jinmao Yiyin focuses on resorts in natural environments like Shanghai Chongming and Taicang, emphasizing quiet luxury and low-density accommodations. Jinmao Pure positions itself in high-end boutique travel, exemplified by the Lijiang Jinmao Pure Snow Mountain Hotel, which

leverages local landscapes and cultural experiences for immersive stays.

Strategic Shift and Market Conditions

Jinmao’s decision to resume independent operation reflects a strategic shift driven by market changes and accumulated expertise. The oversupply of high-end hotels in China and the diminishing “halo effect” of international brands have reduced the benefits of third-party brand affiliation. Additionally, annual fixed brand management fees have transitioned from value-added services to rigid costs. Jinmao now aims to optimize costs and better align hotel products with local ecological and cultural resources by controlling brand and operational decisions internally.

Implications for Product and Brand Positioning

Jinmao’s self-owned brands are designed to deliver localized experiences tailored to domestic customers.

Jinmao Yiyin emphasizes integrating local natural landscapes and cultural elements for resort and leisure offerings aimed at parent-child and health-focused travelers. Jinmao Joy focuses on urban business clients with enhanced conference and service features. Jinmao Pure targets upscale boutique travelers seeking immersive destination experiences. The renaming and operational shift of the Chongming hotel to Shanghai Chongming Jinmao Yiyin Hotel illustrate Jinmao’s move away from relying on international brand management toward independent operational control supported by over 20 years of accumulated hotel experience.
