JetBlue has grounded all flights scheduled to arrive at New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) for the remainder of Tuesday, July 22, 2026, due to widespread thunderstorms impacting the Northeastern United States. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated ground stops at Baltimore, Boston Logan (BOS), Newark Liberty (EWR), New York JFK, Washington Dulles (IAD), and Washington National (DCA) airports.
On July 21, JetBlue canceled 257 flights, representing approximately 25% of its planned schedule for the day, and reported severe delays on 373 additional flights. The airline plans to cancel nearly all remaining JFK arriving flights for the
evening that are not already en route, while continuing limited departures. Internal communications reveal average delays of nearly four hours for JetBlue arrivals.
Delays Spread Across Northeast Airports
An internal JetBlue memo leaked by aviation insider JonNYC indicated that many flights faced even longer delays due to earlier ground stops. Similar disruptions affected LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Boston Logan (BOS), both experiencing ground stops and extensive delays.
The FAA reported departure delays of approximately 90 minutes at JFK, while arrivals remain suspended as the severe weather persists. JetBlue’s escalation of cancellations reflects attempts to manage the operational impact amid these conditions.
Persistent Disruptions Precede Today’s Grounding
The airline’s operational challenges
span multiple days, with cancellations numbering 147 on Monday, July 20; 293 on Sunday, July 19; and 307 on Saturday, July 18, demonstrating an ongoing pattern of disruption preceding July 22’s flight groundings.
ALPA Criticizes JetBlue’s Response to Crew Challenges
The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), representing JetBlue pilots, criticized the airline for exacerbating customer conditions through “unnecessary and extensive delays across JetBlue’s entire network.”
Capt. Wayne Scales, chairman of the JetBlue Master Executive Council, stated that JetBlue’s Crew Scheduling department was “effectively unreachable,” with pilots enduring hours-long hold times. Many pilots and crew members were reportedly stranded at airports without overnight accommodations.
Other Airlines Affected by Northeast Storms
Other airlines also faced
weather-related cancellations, with American Airlines canceling 314 flights on July 22, which accounted for about 8% of its daily schedule. These widespread cancellations reflect the severe impact of thunderstorms across the region’s major airports.
Operational Impact and Recovery Challenges
JetBlue confronts significant operational challenges in recovering normal service levels as crews and aircraft are displaced by these multi-day disruptions. Previous large-scale network failures have demonstrated the risks of operational meltdowns when crews and aircraft become out of position.
