Zurich Airport experienced significant operational disruptions on August 18 and continuing into August 19, 2026, after a partial failure of its central IT system. This system manages critical functions including electronic departure planning, aircraft parking assignments, and coordination with Swiss air traffic control operator Skyguide and European air traffic control agency Eurocontrol.

Manual Operations and Capacity Restrictions Result

The failure forced airport personnel to activate manual contingency procedures to handle departure and arrival coordination. Manually processing flight information slowed operational throughput, reducing overall runway capacity. The airport also imposed substantial restrictions on private recreational flying within the premises to prioritize regular passenger flights and mitigate congestion

during the disruption.

Flight Delays, Cancellations, and Nighttime Deviations

On August 18, the manual procedures and reduced capacity caused flight delays and several cancellations. Notably, eight aircraft landed after the usual night flight cutoff time of 23:30, with the last arriving at 23:55. Flight schedule delays persisted into the following day on August 19, impacting both arrivals and departures.

Technical Response and Ongoing Investigation

Technicians from both the airport operator and the system’s external supplier are actively working to restore the IT infrastructure. Additional staff were deployed in terminal areas to support operations during the malfunction. Investigations have not found any evidence of external interference related to the system failure. The

airport confirmed that full restoration of the IT system is necessary to resume normal flight schedules.

The incident underscores the vulnerability of modern airport operations to disruptions in digital infrastructure. Though established emergency protocols ensured safe flight handling, digital failover capacity proved limited during peak traffic hours, highlighting operational risks inherent in complex airport ecosystems.

The airport operator has urged passengers to verify their flight status online before arriving to manage travel plans amid continuing delays.
